Meet Dr. Mazock
Dr. James Mazock, a San Antonio native, is the proud owner of Lone Star Oral & Facial Surgery. His path to oral surgery has been shaped by a lifelong passion for science, service, and patient care.
Dr. Mazock earned his undergraduate degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences from the University of Texas and his MT certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. He then pursued graduate studies in neuropharmacology, sparking a deep and lasting love for science.
In 1998, he graduated cum laude from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Dentistry, earning numerous academic awards. During his time there, he conducted research in bone and mineral science, leading to multiple publications and recognition by the International Association of Dental Research–Hatton Award Committee. Dr. Mazock went on to serve as president of the UTHSC alumni board, director for the San Antonio District Dental Society, and anesthesia evaluator for the Texas Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons.
Following dental school, Dr. Mazock joined the United States Navy, completing advanced training in general dentistry with the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Forces at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He began his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry–Dallas, where he contributed to research on bone grafting and trauma.
Returning to active duty, Dr. Mazock served two overseas tours and was honored to work as a flight surgeon for the NASA Space Shuttle Recovery Program (STS-114). After ten years of dedicated service, he was honorably discharged and returned to San Antonio to continue caring for his community.

During his career, Dr. Mazock successfully challenged the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) and earned Board Certification as an OMS. He is a Fellow of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), the American College of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (ACOMS), and the Academy of Osseointegration, among many other professional societies.
In 2023, Dr. Mazock was honored with induction into the American College of Surgeons (ACS)—a prestigious distinction held by fewer than 8% of oral surgeons nationwide. He has served as Medical Director of Facial Surgery for the Christus Santa Rosa Healthcare System and was named a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International (FADI).
A respected educator, Dr. Mazock has lectured nationally and internationally on oral and maxillofacial surgery, with special interests in pathology and reconstruction. As a certified CPR instructor, he trains both clinicians and community members in Basic Life Support, promoting life-saving skills outside the hospital setting.
Dr. Mazock is passionate about utilizing the latest reconstructive technologies to achieve results once thought impossible. He and his team were the first in North America to place the two-piece PuRe ceramic dental implant, and he continues to serve as a consultant to implant companies and medical engineers to advance surgical outcomes across the field.
At Home – The Heart of It All
Outside of the office, Dr. Mazock treasures time with his wife and the love of his life, Angela, also a proud San Antonio native. Angela holds a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration and is currently attending Texas A&M University School of Law, pursuing an MLS in Human Resources and Employment Law, Policy, and Management. Her expertise brings exceptional efficiency and professionalism to Lone Star Oral & Facial Surgery.
Dr. Mazock and Angela are the proud parents of two accomplished daughters. Taylor, a 2021 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, spent two years in Washington, D.C., working as Press Secretary for the state of North Carolina. She recently earned dual master’s degrees—one in Digital Content and another in Mass Communication—from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism in Arizona. Addison is the loudest and proudest member of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Class of 2025—WHOOP!—and is currently pursuing her Doctor of Chiropractic degree.
Both daughters continue to bring joy, pride, and plenty of excitement to Mom and Dad’s lives. For the Mazocks, family is truly life’s greatest blessing.
